Phyllis' Story
Phyllis knows what it means to suffer. She was born in Kenya to a single mother who barely made enough to feed her eight children by washing clothes for other people. Phyllis had to drop out of school when she discovered she was pregnant with her daughter. She faced the same hardships as her mother, working long hours to provide for her daughter and her siblings.
She tried to start a small clothing business with the help of a neighbor, but it collapsed because her family relied on it too much. She felt hopeless and trapped in a cycle of poverty. She is now a beneficiary and a participant in the Mercy Mercantile program and beginning to thrive.
She has big dreams for herself and her community. She wants to start a cereals and grains retail business, save some money, take part-time classes (including ones taught with the assistance of our AI mentor chatbot) to finish her education, and teach others about saving and entrepreneurship. She is thankful for Mercy Mercantile’s support and believes they can make a difference in her community, where poverty, crime and drug abuse are rampant. She says Mercy Mercantile has given her hope and dignity.
